The Richness of Diversity
The Richness of Diversity - Towards Social and Cultural Inclusion in Schools
Reichtum der Vielfalt (deutsche Version)
Conference of the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst in cooperation with the Evangelische Akademie Loccum, November 26 – 28, 2010
Theme of the conference:
In the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, more than 100 participants from nine European countries explored educational concepts for and within schools aiming to ensure equal opportunities for children and to promote social and cultural inclusion.
The lectures, project presentations and discussions focussed on the following questions: How important are international school profiles, international cooperation and exchange? Which approaches have been successful in other European countries? In working on these questions, the conference took a look at various groups among students: students with a migrant background, students from underprivileged families, and students with special needs or learning difficulties.
The varied examples from schools and European projects showed impressively: The international opening of schools for exchange, encounters and joint projects with partner schools abroad can become the driving force behind to put social and cultural inclusion in schools into practice.

Programme
Experts from Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland reported on the situation and on educational policies to promote integration and inclusion of disadvantaged students in their countries. Head teachers from schools in challenging circumstances presented practical examples of how they used the richness of diversity among their students to create a stimulating learning environment that raised educational achievements and prevented school failure.
Five thematic workshops explored practical concepts for schools in the following fields: language learning, involvement of parents, learning environment for students with and without special needs, educational concepts for combating exclusion and mentoring programmes. The workshops results were summarized in recommendations.
