Alt, Kölsch, Pils, Weizen or Zwickl: In Germany there are numerous types of beer and more than 1,500 breweries. Most of them are located in Bavaria. But also this is true: the consumption of beer is on the decline while alcohol-free beer is served more often nowadays. By the way: in Germany there are strict limits for alcohol and driving. Thus: better don´t drink and drive.
Bockwurst, Currywurst, Mettwurst or Weisswurst: In Germany there are many sausage variants – and some of them are found only in certain regions. But also this is true: whoever likes to reduce his/her consumption of meat or does not want to eat it at all, will find vegan sausages as well. By the way: you “zuzel” (tsu:tsel) a weisswurst (Bavarian veal sausage), you eat it without the skin – and it should be served not later than 12 o´clock pm.
Bollenhut, Betzel, Dirndl or Lederhosen: traditional clothing in Germany is often characterised by a region´s culture and climate. And in most cases it is worn only on festive occasions. But also this is true: although traditional clothing reflects cultural heritage, when it comes to fashion it keeps up with the times. By the way: whoever is wearing lederhosen or dirndl on the Oktoberfest in Munich will most likely be seen as a „Zuagroaster“ (foreigner).
Herald of spring, good luck charm and herald of fate: all this is symbolised by the cuckoo who gives a signal in the cuckoo clock at the top of the hour. But also this is true: clocks don´t tick differently in our country. By the way: In Germany there is only one time zone. On the other hand, two times a year the time is changed for one hour: by the end of March (summer time) and by the end of October (winter time).

What are foreign language assistants?
To test the waters during school lessons, doing practical work with a class or small group – and learning about Germany as it is in everyday life: this is made possible by the foreign language assistants programme. Anybody who in his/her home country has been studying German Studies or who would like to subsequently teach German is allowed to participate. Apart from methodological and educational practice, foreign language assistants most of all improve their German language skills. Foreign language assistants are an enrichment for schools in Germany and are therefore highly welcomed – but they are no replacement for teachers and they do not give marks.

Who is behind this programme in Germany?
In Germany, the foreign language assistants programme is organised by Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD) (Educational Exchange Service). The PAD is a department of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, a joint board of the 16 federal states. Due to Germany´s federal system, it is the federal states which are in charge of all issues of school, education and culture. Apart from the foreign language assistants programme, the PAD supports student exchange at the European and international level as well as the further training of teachers. Being a national agency of the educational programmes of the European Union, the PAD in Germany also implements the Erasmus+ programme at school level.
